Eating well on a GLP-1: protein, fibre, hydration
A GLP-1 turns the volume down on appetite — which is the point. But eating less makes what you eat matter more. The goal shifts from 'eat less' to 'make each meal count'.
Protein first
When total intake is lower, protein is the nutrient most worth protecting. It supports muscle through weight loss and tends to be the most satisfying part of a meal.
A simple habit: eat the protein on your plate first, while your appetite is at its strongest for the meal.
Fibre keeps things moving
Slowed digestion makes constipation common. Fibre — from fruit, vegetables, and whole grains — helps, and it adds fullness and nutrients for very few calories.
Build it up gradually rather than all at once, which is gentler on a sensitive gut.
Hydration
It's easy to drink less when you're eating less, and mild dehydration can show up as headaches, fatigue, or lightheadedness. Keeping water within reach through the day is a small habit with an outsized payoff.
Small, frequent, gentle
Large meals sit heavily when the stomach empties slowly. Many people do better with smaller portions eaten more often, and with slower, more mindful eating.
What to ease up on
Very greasy or very sugary foods, and a lot of carbonation, tend to make GI side effects worse. You don't have to eliminate anything — just notice what your stomach tolerates and lean toward what feels good.
The short version
- Lower appetite means food quality matters more — prioritise protein.
- Build fibre gradually to ease constipation.
- Hydration prevents headaches and fatigue.
- Smaller, slower meals sit better than large ones.
