Life after a GLP-1: maintenance and avoiding regain
Reaching a goal weight is a milestone worth celebrating — and the start of a new chapter, not the end of the story. Understanding what happens next makes maintenance far less daunting.
GLP-1s manage weight — they don't cure it
Obesity is increasingly understood as a chronic, relapsing condition. GLP-1 medications treat it effectively while they're taken, much as blood-pressure medication works while it's taken.
That framing matters: it isn't a moral question or a willpower question. It's a medical one.
What the STEP 4 trial showed
In the STEP 4 trial, people who had lost weight on semaglutide and then switched to placebo regained a substantial portion of it, while those who continued the medication largely held their loss.
Stopping a GLP-1 is a real decision with real consequences — and one to make with a prescriber, not alone.
Maintenance is a phase, not a finish line
Whether you stay on the medication, taper, or stop, maintenance is its own skill. The job changes from 'lose more' to 'hold steady within a range' — and that range, not a single number, is the realistic target.
Trimm's maintenance mode is built for exactly this: it watches a band you choose and flags drift early, before it becomes regain.
The habits that carry you
The behaviours that protect a maintained weight are the ones worth building during the losing phase, so they're already automatic:
- Enough protein, and regular resistance training to keep muscle.
- Consistent logging — so drift is caught in weeks, not months.
- A maintenance weight range rather than a single goal number.
- Regular check-ins with your prescriber about the long-term plan.
The short version
- Obesity is a chronic condition; GLP-1s manage it while taken.
- STEP 4 showed meaningful regain after stopping semaglutide.
- Maintenance is an active phase — aim for a range, not a number.
- Build protein, strength, and logging habits before you need them.
